From NT to Unix

I have a couple of Java applications that work on XML. The applications basically are developed under Windows NT.
However, soon I may have to port these Java applications to Unix.
Can somebody suggest the points which I have to take care of while doing this? My objective is tobe well equipped with all the information, before I actually do this. I am totally new to Unix.

Please help. Somebody...Anybody...
