With all of the Java and .NET stuff you here about now days at an OOPSLA conference, there is a phenomenon Don Roberts has noticed. I called the "Heirachy of HasDones". Basically it goes like this. Go to a paper presentation and listen to the blather about some hot research topic about Java bytecodes, or GC research or whatever. Near the back of the room, there'll be 3 or 4 guys heckling: "Yeah, we did that in Smalltalk 20 years ago." A little further back is 1 or 2 Lisp guys heckling: "Yeah, we did that 30 years ago." I've added the observation that somewhere there'll be 1 of the 10 Self guys on the planet noting that it'd be better done in with prototypes.
Amusingly, I got to witness it actually happen this moring.
