While the three letter acronym, ESB, might be more marketing hype; you still might want to check out Dave Chappell's (Java Edition) new Enterprise Service Bus book to truly understand if an ESB can be advantageous for your organization.

The first nine chapters seem interesting and could be broadly applicable in any service network. A few chapters, obviously, focus heavily on Java ESB implementation details. And the final chapter looks to produce an overview of the ever popular moving target of WS-* specifications.

 By the way, Microsoft has a pretty good product in this space.
