Robert McLaws likes the look of the new MSN web page, including that new big butterfly that comes flying on the screen with a large crash when the page loads. This is one of the newest JavaScript tricks that web designers are using to insert commercial and other crap I don't care to see when I load the page.
What's really bothersome is that sites like iWon, MSN, MSNBC, ESPN and others are putting sound in with this crap that ends up bothering co-workers, unless you permanently turn off your speakers. This reminds me of that short-lived fad of attaching a WAV file to the loading of a web page back 3-4 years ago. THAT was irritating then, and this is just as irritating.
In a similar vein, ESPN has come up with this LiveMotion plug-in that brings up short ESPN broadcasts, similar to the network news stuff you see shown in airports. The problem is that once you load it, the damn in-motion always loads when you bring up ESPN.com. What if you don't want to watch video - you just want to read the headlines? Well, you're given NO CHOICE. You end up having to stop the browser before the feed loads, and then go to the tab that shows you the news headlines. I've ended up uninstalling the in-motion plug-in because there's no flexibility.
What I wish for is that there will be some kind of settings standard coming up soon, that will allow me to set whether or not I want this kind of animation and video running by default - without impacting the normal browser operation.
