I'm frequently getting the question - what is the difference between Content Management Server Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition. From a technical standpoint, CMS SE is identical to CMS EE with a few restrictions:

  • A maximum of 15 named users are allowed across all the rights groups with the exception of the subscriber group. Obviously you can have an unlimited number of site visitors (i.e. users in the subscriber groups).
  • 1 processor affinity - you can install CMS SE on a multi-processor box but it will bind to just one processor.
  • Only one SE server can serve content to end users; no load balancing is allowed.
  • No site stager support.
  • No host header support.
  • No Microsoft Solution for Internet Business support.

It is possible to have a mixed environment of CMS SE and CMS EE in your organization depending on your business needs. For example, if you have a small organization and will not have more than 15 content contributors but will have many end users of your site, you have the option of using the Standard Edition in your authoring environment with the Enterprise Edition in your production environment.

CMS SE also offers a seamless upgrade to the full CMS EE, ensuring that your Web strategy can always grow with your business.
