OK so I’ve been in Portland as Planet Argon’s Lead Architect for nearly a month and I’ve seen so many interesting things that it makes my head hurt! I think I am really writing this post for myself, but some of you may also find it interesting.

In the last week or so, I have:

  • Traveled to San Francisco and Seattle
  • Met probably 5 or 6 more members of PDX.rb
  • Scored a copy of Domain-Driven Design at Powell’s Technical Books and discovered some ways of how it can be applied to Rails development
  • Learned a few tricks for how to be effective while working with clients on-site (some of them inspired by Domain-Driven Design)
  • Automated the generation of print-quality vector-based newsletters using Ruby on Rails and Applescript, with the help of RubyAEOSA
  • Discovered that you can make .rxml template do somersaults by calling xml.method_missing – the author was clever enough to override send
  • Watched Ruby on Rails operate heavy machinery
  • Expanded my knowledge of the problems of internationalization and made my first commit to Globalize towards the ends of making it safe for PostgreSQL

A word on Globalize – Josh Harvey has done an extraordinarily thoughtful job designing an elegant and usable API. My role in its development for the time being will be limited to adapting it to play nice with PostgreSQL, but who knows what may arise. Currently, it is the only extension for Rails that allows i18n’d database content and I would like to see it succeed.
