Thanks to the wonderful people at iPodLinux I now have linux running on my iPod. I'd managed to accidentally wipe all the music off my iPod (caught by the old autosynch on another machine mistake) so I decided to take the opportunity to do something different. When I discovered that linux was available I just couldn't resist it . The whole installation took under half an hour and I now have a dual-booting machine. I'd re-loaded about 15Gb of music back onto the iPod before I performed the installation as I was interested to see if anything got screwed by the process. Fortunately the music partition is not touched in any way and all the files are safe. The installation actually takes advantage of the fact that the existing boot partition has plenty of free space allowing it to be resized and a new partition added to hold the linux root. The user interface, podzilla, is pretty clean and, in addition to the music player and calendar, offers a few games including chess! The linux boot still has access to the partition containing the music files so I can listen to music using either OS. I still love the Apple interface, but I do like the idea that I may be able to write my own apps for the iPod. It'll be interesting to see which UI dominates my iPod usage over the next couple of months. If you plan to try linux on iPod yourself then please make sure that your iPod version is supported before you toast the thing....
