Out of all the methods, the easiest install on VMWare Player is to download the Etch NetInstall ISO from Ddebian.org and use this method fro creating the VMWare files. This will allow you to boot from the ISO file on the first time, make sure you change from cd-rom file to device in vmx file for second boot.
