The Debian distros at VMWare's community site do not contain vmware-tools installed. However, Russell Ost has provided both Sarge an Etch with vmware-tools installed as VMWare images. Thus, it faster even if you installed the wrong image to download this image and do the apt-gets or aptitiude stuff to get a full debian installed kernel uneder VMWare Player with vmware-tools installed rather than downlaod the full vmware server to get just the vmware-tools.
VMware-tools allows you synch guest OS to host OS clock, higher resolution screens, and etc using VMWare Player and thus it is a must have.
