An interesting discussion over beer ( sweltering heat in London at the mo ) at lunch time with W who likes to use the URL http://null when commenting.

Can blogging harm your chances of getting a job, or generally have a negative impact on your non blogging related career?

The answer is a definite yes , haven't you heard of blog induced sacking?

When you are looking for a job as a developer in some company, will your potential employer go online and read your blog to get a feeling for the kind of person you are.

The answer is again yes. I have heard of cases where the spirit of ones blog was ones undoing in as far as getting the job.

Writing honestly of the shortcomings of your employer, even with out the minute details and without exposing any trade secrets could be risky. Occasionally senior management can take offence to the mots peculiar things such as denim or headphones , loose all sense of proportion, and inflict pain upon the lower ranks.

Can blogging further your career?

In some cases I guess it can, It certainly has had a positive effect so far for a few bloggers, mainly those who are figure heads for small software companies. Having the right people read your blog might improve your chances of selling into their company. It's nice to be able to have a personal connection with a company, and at the moment neither Mr Ellison , McNealy or Gates seem too keen too blog.

Might they be concerned for their career ?

Just to be on the safe side : Caveat Blogger
