I nearly always ask an interviewer, "What do you like about this place?" and then follow it up with "What DON'T you like?"
When I was offered a position at my current company, I emailed my lead-to-be a list of questions, such as:
* Owning what's in my head. Some companies want employees to sign away all rights to the ideas they generate, whether at home or on the job. What's your position, assuming no conflict of interest? * Writing books, articles, etc. Any issues if I continue to write the occasional book or article? * Blogging. Any issues? Obviously, it's important to exercise good judgment when discussing work-related topics. * Moonlighting. Any policy on occasional part-time work for others? Assuming no conflict of interest or effect upon my work at my day job. * Training/Education/Books/Tools. Do you pay (within reason) for employees to attend conferences or training? What about books and software tools?
* Contributing to Open Source projects. Any problems? Usual disclaimers apply.
