Approach 2 & multiple log files

In your finalizer article for JavaWorld you say:

"Given this design, you could write to multiple log files with 1 instance of this class"

Assuming you mean simultaneously (otherwise its true for all approches)
this is incorrect.

To do this you would need multiple fos, pw & logFileOpen
variables, and to include the filename in the writeToFile &
closeLogFile methods..
