Myles,

I tested your code under Visual Age 3.02 and it worked fine!
the output was "message: This is a test 0 1 2 3 4 ".

The only common mistake I have seen been made in this sort of
application is a new request is created in the JSP, instead of
the one passed in via the service method of the JSP, though that
isn't the case here.

Guess something odd is happening in your servlet environment that
is causing the message attribute to be lost between servlet calls.
