error handling in an web application

I have a backend oracle database & java (jdbc)servlets middle tier & html which shows the output screens to the user.

Can U please tell me how to do error handling for the whole project so as to detect errors on server side itself (for eg:data base error occurs) ., when error occurs & if necessary show user friendly messages to the user.

Can U give me an example of code or any good links to get error handling for an e-commerce web application.
