Setting JInternalFrame

Hi i've inserted a menu and a splitplane in a JFrame,click on a menuitem and an intrenal frame opens,i've added the splitpane and internal frame to a JLayeredPane ,it opens up but does not respond to the setSize and setLocation methods,instead covers the whole application area.help how to set this up.
