controlling Micro$oft Excel from Java

I'd like to control Excel, set cell values execute macros etc, from
a Java application. Any insights on how to best do that would be
helpful. I've been assuming I'll interface to the Excel COM interface
but other options would be of interest, on a Mac I'd use AppleScript but
unfortunetly I need to work on a PC.

If COM is the best approach I'd appreciate any information on existing
bridging classes, interface definitions etc. Thanks.
