Shutting down the application server

We have our application runnning as a server.It is a main program which initilizes the ORB, regisrers the services with the Name Server and goes into a sleep mode through
thread.currentThread().wait(). WE launch this as a process on UNIX.We want to write an shutdown mechanisn which would de-register the services from the Name Server, deallocate the resourses and then make an exit. What is the best way to do a clean shutdown ?
