Is perl reqd for running Swing programs?

In Bruce Eckel Book, it is suggested to install perl in order to run his programs. Iam facing problems in installing perl on my desktop (Windows NT). Is it essential that I should install perl for running his programs? I got struck up at his chapter 13(Applets/swing). Could someone help me how to install perl for Win NT or how to run programs from Bruce Eckel Java2 book(swing/applet programs) without installing perl? Any help is appreciated. Thanks ... Babu
