How to Check printer Status???

Hi friends,

I want to print a string to my LPT1 port, when I print using
printwriter class and printer's power is off then machine hangs.

Can somebody help in telling how to find the printer staus before printing whether it is off/on. and Is there any other way to print a string to LPT1 port. I am using JAVA 2.

it is very urget, If anybody can help,
