Reading User-Defined Environment Variables in Java Servlets in Multiple Platforms

Hi,

I need to read some user defined Env Variables already set by the user. But, What i need is a code which will run in all platofrms like UNIX, Windows NT and Mac OS. atleast, ideas would be of great value.
