A new article on Sun's Swing Connection Web site by Shannon Hickey shows techniques to create really neat UI effects with Swing.

http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/swing2d/index.html

Here's an excerpt:

Many developers look at the beautiful GUIs of some applications, imagining extreme complexity, and say "I wish I could do that!" In fact, you can achieve many of the striking effects seen in today's advanced GUIs by integrating a few lines of 2D code into your Swing application.

And here's another interesting Swing Connection article about creating component borders that look like Gnome or KDE-style components:

Wow! Does anyone really use these techniques? They sure make Java stand out from your average Visual Basic app.

Hi Frank,

It certainly looks cool! It would be even cooler if the UI's were borderless, hiding the title bar.

Instead of having the programmers chosing the images they should combine the technique as discussed in the articles with a 'skinning' technique as used by applications such as WinAmp. By specifying guidelines for the images the coders can leave the designwork to the graphic artist, potentially leading to nicer results :) Have a look at WinAmps 'skins' section to see some amazing examples.

Cheers,
Berco
