Hi,

Will there be a mobi formatted version of "Programming in Scala Second Edition" ? If so, is there an ETA? Also, if I've already purchased the PDF version would I need to re-buy the .mobi version if/when it comes out?

Thanks,
James

Hi James,

A .mobi version will be forthcoming once we get the book to the printer. I.e., once it is in its final form. I can't say exactly when but it would be out by end of January probably. I'm not yet sure about the pricing model, so I'll let you know at that time. One thing we're planning on doing differently this time is selling the .mobi (Kindle) version through Amazon, so that may change how or if we can sell it here at Artima.

Thanks.

Bill

That would be a great shame; I assumed buying the eBook (PDF) would allow access to all eBook formats the same way most tech book sellers seem to do -- azw/mobi is slightly easier to read on Kindle, of course.

I'd not be well-pleased to be asked to buy it twice for the alternative format(s).

Hey Bill,

Good to hear that their will be a Kindle version in January. I would hope that putting it up on Amazon wouldn't affect how it can be sold directly.

Couldn't it be $29.95 either way? The convenience/exposure of Amazon, or the benefit of a DRM-free PDF/mobi bundle directly from Artima.

Hi Nathan,

I think that's what we'll do, at least for now. I.e., we'll continue doing what we've been doing at Artima, which is you pay one price for "eBook" and you can download in as many formats as we provide. The concern I had was if someone bought the Kindle version at Amazon, or an ePub version at Barnes & Noble, and then find out they could have got a bundle from Artima, they'd be unhappy and want an upgrade discount on the bundle. It would be quite complicated and difficult for us to tell who actually bought the book as an eBook through the channel and who didn't, so I'd rather not go there. So I guess I'll just have to tell such folks sorry, next time buy direct from Artima if you want multiple formats. Do you think that's reasonable?

Hi Bill,

For computer programming books, I usually check the publisher first, see if they have a better price or multiple DRM free formats. I suppose some people may be unhappy if they see afterwards that the bundle could've been better. Some may complain, like you say, I don't know.

You can point out the pros:
- Kindle books bought on Amazon have Whispersync to sync notes and bookmarks between devices.
where as:
- Mobi's directly from Artima (or any other publisher) won't have Whispersync, but are DRM free.

Since there are Kindle apps for PC/Mac, having a PDF isn't essential (or similarly having an epub for iPhone/iPad/Android).

You can also suggest that they ask for a refund on the Kindle content and the purchase the bundle outright:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200144510&#content

I'm less familiar with the B&N situation. If they are using Adobe DRM, you may have more complaints. Some people may want those epubs in Apple iBook which uses Apple's own DRM. However, Adobe DRM is used for the Nook as well as the Sony devices, and B&N has an iPad app, so being stuck with a B&N purchase may not be a big deal.

All that said, I think you'll receive less complaints from Amazon/B&N purchasers then you would for having fees associated with each format.

I'd just like to add my voice in support of the PDF+mobi bundle here at Artima - I was pleasantly surprised to discover recently that I could download the first edition in mobi format. I have a Kindle, and the reading experience with mobi is excellent.

However, I have a strong aversion to buying Kindle content directly from Amazon. Pretty much everything I read on the Kindle is content bought elsewhere and transfered on it by myself. I love the device, but Amazon's policies regarding ebook sales are a complete disaster. They can remotely delete books purchased through them, and have done so repeatedly and recently. (Personally I think that comes pretty close to book burning, however it at least means that sales through Amazon should be considered "final until they change their mind").

With that mini-rant out of the way: Let's have a Print+PDF+mobi bundle :-)

Thanks
Carl-Eric

No worries. I decided to continue the eBook bundle approach yesterday. When you buy the PDF you can download whatever other eBook formats we have for free. We're working on the mobi version of PinS 2ed already.

The mobi version is now available for download. If you purchased the PDF, log into your account and go to your settings. Follow the link to redownload your PDF and click the mobi button.

To be fair Amazon leaves it up to the publisher whether or not to use DRM and what to do if there is a copyright violation.

That's no excuse for how 1984 and other issues have been handled by Amazon but you can't point a finger at them without pointing a finger at the publishers.

Kudos to Artima for having a sensible ebook policy that avoids DRM and gets .mobi files out early.

For what it's worth, +1 for epub, for use with iBook on the iPad. I don't have a kindle.

Try out Calibre, for conversion. It usually does an extremely good job, so long as you use a reasonably recent version.
I have books from Informit, and they specifically only provide ePub's then recommend using Calibre to convert them.

Understood. However, at the top of the thread Bill Venners said that there would be a Kindle version sold through Amazon. I'd prefer to buy that one for the multi-device reading & sync. If it's not going to come out for a while though I'll probably do mobi or print.
