I want exercises

Hello,

I bought the PDF and the hard copy, and I like it. But I would appreciate exercises for every chapter, like in "Thinking in Java", which has great exercises.

That way those who don't want exercises STILL don't have to do them, and those who can learn well with exercises have this additional option.

I hope this doesn't result in everyone stating why he belongs to one group or the other or why only his group should survive ...

We had exercises on the list, but due to time constraints they won't make it into the first edition. Sorry about that. We've got that on the list for the second edition.

as much as I'd like to have exercises, it does make sense to postpone them rather than anything else.

If you are starving to get hand-on experience with scala I would suggest looking into exercises from "SICP by Abelson, Sussman" and into project-euler web-site.

Bill, what if you or someone responsible create a forum branch or perhaps a wiki of "Programming in Scala: exercises"? You could place there exercises you already developed, also there are a lot of knowledgeable people in Scala community, who would like to contribute.
I think, this will be a clear benefit for everybody:
- authors of the book will drive-test existing exercises and got a bunch of fresh one for free;
- Scala community people will get a new way to show their attitude and to contribute the future success of the book and Scala language;
- end users like Kai and myself will get much wanted exercises.

What do you think? (I'm posting the same question to Nabble "Scala - User" forum.

I'm talking about something organized traditionally: accordingly to the book's chapters (a community contribution could be a link too: http://blog.tmorris.net/revised-scala-exercises/). I would say that it is better to have a not entirely correct exercise here, which is then improved interactively, than not to have such a site at all.
To me, an ideal model is what is shown for Manning books: http://manning.com/. Look at how C# in Depth site http://manning.com/skeet/ is organized, how active is Author Forum: http://www.manning-sandbox.com/forum.jspa?forumID=352. It also allows everybody to see errata http://csharpindepth.com/Errata.aspx, one thing I'm missing for Programming in Scala. Also look at the book's companion site: http://www.csharpindepth.com/.

Sorry, if I'm bothering you too much. I'm a professional Web developer (ASP.NET) and care a lot about sites usability. I love Scala too.

Hello,

any follow up on this exercises topic?

I'm learning Scala - mainly reading this book - and would love to have exercises for the content of each chapter, as many of the good books do - and I do consider this book as a very good one. it's for sure a big help on learning - in fact I only consider that I know the content if I can do the proposed exercises.
