David Sklar writes about writing his book "Learning PHP 5" and how he used DocBook.

I used DocBook for my book ("Professionelle Softwareentwicklung mit PHP 5"), too, and documented the writing process in a separate weblog.

One thing I did different than David is that I used XML Inclusions (XInclude) to include the listings into the <programlisting> elements. This saved me the hassle of CDATA escaping and made the generation of a TAR archive of the listings really simple:

svn export http://wopr/svn/psmp5/trunk/listings/de psmp5-listings
tar cvf output/de/psmp5-listings.tar psmp5-listings
rm -Rf psmp5-listings
