MS Word has irritated me for so long that I long ago stopped trying to figure out why it was doing what it was doing. Well, after the rant above, I came across this post in my referer logs - which explained to me some of what's going on:
I agree with what James said, but let me riff on the stupid formatting implementations in Word (at least the 97/2000 versions) for a second. The number one problem in Word is the fact that formatting is done at the paragraph level. As I explain it to my students, every time you press the Enter key, Word thinks that there is a new paragraph. (Ever use Word with something other than the default font and font size and then have the font revert?) But generally, if there is a new paragraph, the formatting you set may change. As an example, if you create a numbered list, press the Enter key twice, and work on a new numbered list, there is no telling if the new list will take on the numbering of the old or increase line spacing or what. And this is just *one* of the idiosyncrasies of Word
I suppose that should have been obvious based on the evidence, but I was always too torqued to look. Now maybe I can work around it. In the meantime - maybe Scoble can track down the Word team and beat them with a stick until they fix this.
