One thing a lot of people don't get about the web is the permanency. Not of sites or urls - those change all the time. No, I'm talking about the various ramblings and mutterings we all push out. Whether it's in email (saved by who knows who), USENET postings (cached by Google will say something about what he's always thought. Someone will jump down his throat, producing contradictory evidence about what he's said before. I very much doubt that Dave is trying to mislead. Rather, like most people, he's unconsciously adjusting his past beliefs to his current ones. The problem is, he's got a record now that anyone can search.
This is true for all of us who blog - I wonder how many wild eyed assertions I've made over the last year that I will later wish I had never made? If they weren't recorded, they would gradually fade away. Instead, they linger out there. Over time, this will probably force people to be more careful in what they say. In the meantime, it's going to provide endless entertainment for the "gotcha!" crowd.
