Ted Leung points out that many of the ideas that went into the Sun HotSpot technology came out of Self, which is Smalltalk based. It's actually more amusing than that. The Animorphic Smalltalk VM was offered around for sale in the mid 90's - it was a highly optimizing Smalltalk VM. Sun bought the technology, but somehow managed to forget that they already had the technology (Self). It then took Sun close to three years to apply the technology to Java... because the sort of optimizations that work well for a dynamic language are not necessarily the same ones that work well for a static language....
