Spotted in MemoRanda says that software development is not engineering. I couldn't agree more. In fact, I think it's more like making a movie or a tv series. You have a script which may or may not make sense, you have to fix it as you go, adjust the plot to keep it interesting and stay on budget while paying expensive actors, I mean, contractors and hardware vendors and service providers.
