Feed Description: Smalltalk can do that
I once worked on a project (in VisualWorks Smalltalk) where we needed to interface to a bar code scanner. The vendor for the scanners told us that we had to carefully study our environment to determine the proper scanner. They said we had to carefully watch the lighting because it could affect the scanner.
Well, we decided to just pick up a fairly cheap scanner and play with it. We interfaced it to Smalltalk through the keyboard port. We found that it was quite forgiving of the environment. In fact, just to prove this to my supervisor, I drew a bar code on a white board using a marker. I could point the scanner to the bar code and scan it accurately. I think these devices are more forgiving than people give them credit for.
