But the strength of Java lies in its community, and frankly, right now, I don't have a whole lot of hope for Java given what I'm seeing right now.

So the success of java has been in its community? Well, that's probably true. If that's the case, then Smalltalk is on the right track. After so many years of being behind doors, closed, proprietary and not for a 'community' as such, Smalltalk has come out of the closet. Smalltalk Solutions has put us on the map and the Smalltalk Industry Council continues to make sure that things stay that way. I'm part of the Smalltalk community and it truelly is up to people like me and the other bloggers to promote Smalltalk. As Alan Knight put it "You want to know who can help you with promoting Smalltalk? The STIC? No.. it's you" (not actual quote, just along those lines).
