Misplaced Complaints

In Blog Comment spam, Jim Robertson complains about how e-mail and now blog comments are ruined by the spammers who inhabit "the shallow end of the gene pool."

Oh come now, there's no reason to insult these hard working people! We should give them credit for their brilliance in identifying and exploiting an opportunity provided by the incredibly thoughtless design of the Internet. The spammers didn't create this "commons" that is so ripe for abuse. The "Fallacy of the Commons" is a well-known human behavioral pattern. Anything that is "free" will always be abused for personal gain by some self-centered idiot: be it the Boston Commons, the range lands of the West, an all-you-can-eat salad bar, or the Internet.

This problem will not be solve until per message (or per Kb, or per transaction) charges are assessed.
