Heinlein On Altruism

The conversation in Jim Robertson's blog on Software and profits touches on the role of altruism in open source software development. I thought it would be interesting to toss in a couple of quotes by Robert A. Heinlein on the subject of altruism:

Beware of altruism. It is based on self-deception, the root of all evil.
If tempted by something that feels "altruistic," examine your motives and root out that self-deception. Then if you still want to do it, wallow in it.

Both quotes are from Robert A. Heinlein: The Notebooks of Lazarus Long, D. F. Vassallo, 1978.
