I've been watching Stargate SG-1 for quite awhile now - I think it's the best Sci-Fi show on TV now. Sure, there are a few issues - the expeditionary teams are too small (4 people) and the wrong service (they play Air Force, they should be Marines). Those are nits though; the team size is a compromise to allow for character development. What's good about the show is the writing - contrasting it with Star Trek: Enterprise is particularly bad - for Star Trek

What do I mean by that? Well, there's always "and then a miracle occurs" moment on Star Trek - one where some seemingly unsolvable conflict is solved, typically without force. I fully expect last week's cliff hanger to end the same way, without any difficult choices having to be made. Stargate, on the other hand, does confront the characters with crappy choices and "least bad" alternatives (look at how they ended the replicator threat, for instance - no "everyone ends up happy" outcome there)

I'm wondering how things are going to progress this year - they have done a couple of things that offer some interesting possibilities, but also some areas that could be hard to deal with:

  • The Stargate program has been revealed to other major nations (last year)
  • There's just been a change in administrations in the series world, with their political opponent Kinsey becoming the new VP
  • It looks like next week's episode will make the existence of the Goauld public (world-wide) knowledge

I'm very curious to see how well they deal with that - it's a big change in the dynamics of the series. For the most part, I'm happy with changes in that direction; I think X-Files washed all the interest (at least for me) out of the "evil government conspiracy" back story. I guess we'll have to see how it develops - but I'm interested in seeing how it does. With Enterprise, I tend to miss shows, and just not care a lot...
