Intel Chief Executive Craig Barrett said today the chip maker will offer a new version of its Xeon chips for the low-end computer server market that will mimic the capability of chips from rival Advanced Micro Devices.
The company said the new chip currently code-named Nocona, offers the 64-bit capability found in AMD's Opteron family of chips for servers. This spring Intel will offer both a Xeon for low-end servers and a 64-bit version of its Prescott Pentium 4 chip for workstations with single processors.
I like the attempt to salvage their pride over the itanium by claiming that this is only for the "low end" server market...
