A Defense of Marriage Amendment?

I have a simple answer to the current uproar over gay marriage. It is time for the government to get out of the marriage business. Government should concern itself only with the registration of a specific type of social contract that fixes in law the rights and privileges of the parties involved, gay or hetero. Marriage is a religious state that can be separately entered (or exited) by whomever wants it, in whatever way they want it, with blessings from clergy or without. The true sanctity of a marriage is in how it is lived, not in government definitions.

The operative principle, in this and many other contentious issues, is the separation of church and state. Keep them separate and things get simple. Confuse them and it's endless turmoil.
