We use VNC in a configuration where our (Linux) app runs in a vncserver, and then on the same machine we open up a full screen vncviewer. This has a number of advantages for us.
We thought it was kind of buggy though; the client kept shutting down. Especially when just left alone. Looking in the man page for something earlier today though, my eyes caught on the "IdleTimeout" option. Do not get burned (or duped into thinking your client's buggy) by this. I don't know if all versions of the VNC servers do this, but the RealVNC 4beta4 sets it by default to 1 hour.
Other than that, we've been really excited about RealVNC's upcoming version 4 release. It is really fast, and we really like some of the options they've added to it. I am grateful to all the work those guys have done.
