Wired News covers the Rover problem - some kind of nasty comms problem, unclear at this point if it's hardware or software related. This points out to me why you need manned exploration if you are serious - robots are fine, but like anything else - they break. And when they break, you might well need a repairman. Consider mission critical software systems - do you ever need to call in a consultant to get things going? It's the same problem. Do you just leave the critical software in a broken state, or do you call to get it fixed?
