I'm no IRC veteran, but one thing that has become apparent is that each has its own flavor of hospitality. Some are very helpful, some are not. Of those that I have visited, I would have to rank the irc.parcplace.net:#smalltalk, irc.freenode.net:#squeak, and irc.freenode.net:#gnustep ones as the the best. People have been helpful. Friendly. And generally forgiving of the inheritent problems in communication one has with such mediums. As an objective-c newbie, the #gnustep one was most impressive.
irc.freenode.net:#linux can be helpful sometimes. It's such a broad topic that you just never know. I'd also rank the irc.mozilla.net:#thunderbird/#firebird channels as moderately helpful.
The worst channel I've visited so far goes to irc.freenode.net:#debian. I love debian, but I think I'll run to Walmart and purchase the Flamesuit/Civility filtering chip combo before I visit there again.
How 'bout you? You got a most-detested or a most-helpful channel?
