I've been thinking about this lately. I'm currently involved in a UI intensive project. And as I've posted, I've recently acquired an iLamp. What so impresses me about OSX is the attention to detail. I as a customer bought it and love it. But if I had played the customer role for Apple as they developed OSX, I would have told them not to waste the time they do on much of the polish they do. I'm glad they didn't ask me to be their customer.
I'm far from the league of Apple UI guys in my UI design, but I do feel inspired to attempt to give the same attention to the UI I'm working on. But, I'm a big XP fan too. XP admittedly punts right away on this issue: "Spartan UIs". Which is great for a bunch of guys who probably don't want to do UIs writing a payroll system for some bean counters, but that's a pretty limited view of the world.
So basically, the dillema comes down to this. If you're going to do the XP thing, how do you ever build that polished product, that work of art whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts? Can you? Or is XP just for getting adequate products to business people in a hurry?
