I don't expect many have noticed the subtle change in my blog title. My readership is what, in the 10's? But it's fun pretending.
Recently, I was pairing with a local acquaintance, and he saw me publish some code, and it donned on him that "TAG" is my initials. Sometimes I've had people see code I replicated in the Open Repository and express the same: "oh, I thought it was just some sort of meta data thing." It's my initials. At the time, I started blogging, I had a reputation for publish packages called ExtraThis or ExtraThat that were usually enhancements to VisualWorks. It was a play on the fact that I was sort of an extended part (very minor indeed) of the VW development effort.
So it was with some vane enjoyment, that I refactored the "tag line" on this blog recently to "Is this TAG extra?" I knew something. I knew that today, the day of this blog, would realistically be my last day at Key Technology. Starting September 25th, I won't be able to consider myself an "extra" to the Cincom Smalltalk development process any more. I'll be a real live employee working on the inside, rubbing elbows with, and learning a lot from a very talented team of people. I am very excited about this opportunity. It's a good opportunity for me, and sort of an obvious end game after 15 years of very active Object/VisualWorks involvement.
It has been hard to come to this decison though. Really hard. I really like what I do at Key. I am an "engineer" at heart, and the equipmment we work with is just so cool. I love the domain. This decision came right at the conclusion of 10 good years here at Key. I work with a good group of people here. I am indebted forever to the group of people I work with at Key, and all that they have taught me. Thank you Key. Thank you very much.
So for now, I'll rename the blog "Objology". Yeah, it's so 80's/90's and "Objects" are passe` now. But it goes with the Objologist thing and I haven't got anything better yet.
Key will be hiring someone to replace me. There is no official "job posting" on the key site yet, but I know my boss would love to hear from you if you think you might be interested in learning more about what working at Key and these really cool machines might be like.
