Everyone owes a big thank you to Bob Nemec for stepping forward to lead STIC. I can only imagine what a thankless job it is. Everyone expects something different of you; everyone expects you to fulfill their dream of how STIC would solve all of their problems.
Not to be left out... here's my thoughts. STIC can resurrect yet-another-website if it wants. I don't see it making that big a difference. The numerous Smalltalk related blogs, aggregated by the likes of PlanetSmalltalk.org are a more effecitve and vibrant "web site" for Smalltalk.
So, for next year's STIC meeting, I move that we make a circle of chairs. Alcoholics Anonymous style. And we go around the room, and give each person a short moment to:
- mention something positive that they've seen someone else do for the "Smalltalk Cause". something that has inspired them to do more themselves
- mention something that they think they themselves might want to do in the next year to "further the Smalltalk Cause." Even if its just wishing out loud.
- or just pass
Year after year, it's been the same theme. As we walked to dinner that night, that was the first comment one of the other guys made "I go to the STIC meeting every year, and ya know... it's the same thing every year." So it's my vote that we drop, even ban, anything that even approaches the pretext of "someone else should do such and such." Or "what we need is..."
Another fun idea for a STIC meeting. This is inspired by Dave Thomas's performance at the most memorable STIC meeting ever. Maybe we should just put buckets of rolls around the room and we can all have a food fight with them. Let our frustrations out and all.
