This is a case study highlighting the development process, successes and setbacks of developing PlantVision, image analysis software for mineral processing plants. PlantVision is a hybrid system built using Smalltalk MT, Microsoft DirectX and various third party components in C accessed through com interfaces. This experience illustrates the productivity and fast time to market achieved by using existing frameworks together with the rapid prototyping, easy debugging and test driven development natural to Smalltalk.
