Awhile back, I moved my printer to an old laptop I had lying around, making it into a more or less dedicated print server. I attached the HP 610 to it, and that's where the trouble began. Windows found the driver, installed it, and set up sharing. I stopped thinking about it until I wanted to print something - at which point I noticed the steady stream of blank pages emitting from the printer.
Sigh. So I opened the shell, and removed the printer from the list. Joy, Windows then kept informing me (over and over) that it had "found new hardware". It was all I could do to get rid of those notifications and get to the "Add printer" wizard (which I had to tell not to auto-install).
So - recalling vaguely that I'd been through this before, I settled down to lying to Windows - telling that the printer was, in fact, not an HP 610, but an HP 550c. Well - that worked fine, including sharing (even to the Mac).
Every time I think that one platform has pissed me off for the last time (The Mac and the stupid monitor thing), the other one steps right up and smacks me upside the head...
