In a report published on Microsoft’s Web site June 7, Microsoft senior vice president Bob Muglia acknowledged that Longhorn will not include Monad, the command line shell and scripting language previously promised as part of the Windows update. “It will take three to five years to fully develop and deliver,” he said.
This is not the first time Microsoft has scaled back plans for Longhorn. Last August, the company announced that the Windows update would not include WinFS, the XML-based storage subsystem, earlier touted as a key component.
They gained a short term advantage by pushing everything in - and a long term headache. I'm unclear on one thing - is that 3-5 years for Monad, or for Longhorn? Either way, it's a sorry indictment of how they build software in Redmond.
