Alan picked up a fact that I missed in the Unaxis talk:
Jim Robertson had a writeup of the talk here . One interesting tidbit he didn't mention was a question about how much of the world's semiconductor production has been processed by machines running Smalltalk. His answer was that it was probably around 100%. Unaxis makes three different kinds of machines, and for one type (Mask etching, I believe) they have around 85-90% market share. And they're just one of Adventa's customers for ControlWorks. Other places have already talked about e.g. AMD's use of ControlWorks.
So - Java may run on the phone you have, but the chips running it were built with Smalltalk. A more important difference - Sun makes approximately $0 for the Java penetration there, while we actually make money from the Smalltalk use.
