Since the Smalltalk compiler is just another set of classes within the Smalltalk environment, you can change it if necessary. David Buck shows the the simple changes he made in VisualWorks Smalltalk to enable programmers to write 45200000000 (45.2 billion) as 45.2b, 3000000 (3 million) as 3m, 60000 as 60k and so on.
