Pretty much all development methodologies stress the need to incorporate the users into the development process. There is nothing 'Agile' about this requirement.

Unfortunately, like all other methodologies, there is lots of theory but little or no useful guidance on how this can be realistically done. The overwhelming majority of users have no sustained interest in the software development process whatever their interest in the delivered product. In my particular - if somewhat extreme - case, we develop a lot of stuff for use by field salesmen who are paid on a sales commission basis. We can only get them to sit down in the office by covering their lost commission for that day and we haven't the budget to do that often. Other examples are not difficult to find.

What would be useful would be to see less stuff about 'ideal world' solutions and more about how to mitigate the effect of problems of working in the 'real world'.

Vince.
