It's been a moviel weekend for us as we spent most of our time watching new releases in the theater and on DVD. First, was Pirates of the Carribean - which I'll give a B+. Good action movie with some good humor. Next, was Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life - which I'll give an A-. Not quite as good (in terms of emotion) as the 1st, but lots of action sequences.
Finally, it was I Spy on DVD. Glad we didn't pay $8 to see it in the theaters, but not bad for a $3 5-day rental.
A couple of observations recently:
Why is it that movie reviews are grading down movies for lack of realism more and more lately? The reason I go to movies is to escape reality. If I want to see reality I'll watch the news and get depressed. I go to these movies (like 007, Lara Craft, Die Hard, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris, etc), to see fantasy ... to watch the good guys win against all odds.
It amazes me how so many people cannot sit still for even 100 minutes to watch a movie. I can't count the number of people who just "had" to get up and get that Coke, take a call, etc. And don't get me started about the people who show up late, only to try and scurry through the dark to find their seats - inevitably yakking next to you as they discuss where they should sit! I think these are great examples of our society showing less and less ability to focus for even the slightest amount of time. Cell phones, pagers, PDAs, satellite TV, wireless networking ... I love technology, but I think some people are affected by it like a compulsive gambler - they just can't give it up. It ends up bleeding over into social and family interaction.
