Sue and I saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow tonight. We loved it. These are the kind of movies that Hollyweird doesn't make anymore choosing instead to grind political axes. I haven't had this much fun since Raiders of the Lost Ark, which this movie reminded me of. It's a cross between a Science Fiction, a Steampunk, gee-whiz Flash Gordon, and a sendup of old Pulp magzines and movies blended with some unique imagination, set in 1939. The story (and the SF) clearly have some holes but the thrill here is the energy you felt as a kid watching movies and reading pulps and comics. The look of the film is amazing, which Roger Ebert describes as “is filmed halfway between full color and sepia tone, so that it has the richness of color and yet the distance and nostalgic quality of an old photograph. Its production design and art direction remind me of covers for ancient pulp magazines like Thrilling Wonder Stories.” The chemistry between Paltrow and Law is fantastic and Jolie is great as Franky, a sexy pilot. Highly recomended!
