Thanks to Shawn A. Van Ness who points out The Oyster, a USB 2.0 hub that's designed as one of the most potentially useful laptop docks ever.

They sell it on Amazon. The comments vary between REALLY happy and REALLY angry, so it must be an excellent product. ;)

One downside: it doesn't fit that iBook that I love so much. However, it might make my Compaq usable again, since I completely and thoroughly hate its keyboard and trackpad...
